Peter Werry and Eliza Stephens Family

Peter, the fifth child of John Werry and Ann Congdon, was born in 1800 in England. In the year 1828, Peter married Eliza Stephens born in 1806 in the Parish of St. Winnows, Cornwall, England.

They had ten children born in England. Two sons died in England. On 11 April 1845, Peter and Eliza boarded the steamer Sperma City with their large family of children. Captain Moon was in command of the vessel and brought his passengers safely to Quebec, Canada East after several weeks sailing on 3 June 1845.

The Werry family made their way to Darlington Township, where they settled. Four years after their arrival, Peter was able to purchase 100 acres of Clergy Reserve Land. He bought the south half of Lot 27 Concession 6 in Darlington Township. They named their new homestead Roselandvale after an English Chapel of the same name, not far from their home back in England.

After thirty-five years of residence in Canada, Peter Werry died on 23 May 1880. His remains were interred in Eldad Cemetery at Solina. His wife, Eliza (Stephens) Werry, died on 15 March 1904.

Lifetimes of their Children

Ann Rundle, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born 12 January 1829 in Lanreath, Cornwall, England. She grew up to marry John Clark. Her death took place on 10 September 1872 in Manilla, Victoria County, Ontario.

Thomas, son of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born in 1830. He married Eliza Warder. Thomas died 1 November 1915 at their Cartwright Township home.

Thirza, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born in 1838 in England. She married Thomas Albert Wright. He was born in 1830 and died in 1915. Thirza (Werry) Wright died 26 December 1924 at their home in Cartwright Township.

Ann Maria, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born 23 August 1832 in England. She married Isaac Elford and died 18 January 1929. Ann is buried in the Zion Cemetery near Woodville, Ontario.

Catherine, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born 20 May 1842 in England. She married George Vice and died 6 January 1926 in Oshawa, Ontario.

William, son of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born in England in 1834. He married Elizabeth Grace Bray, daughter of Jonathan Bray and Sophia Cole. William Werry died 4 April 1915 at their home in Darlington Township. Elizabeth (Bray) Werry died 9 February 1918.

Jane, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born in 1836 in England. She married John Clark.

Joseph, son of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born 1846 in England.

Sarah, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born in Canada West in 1848. She married Thomas Hancock and died 25 December 1910 in Oshawa, Ontario.

Esther, daughter of Peter and Eliza (Stephens) Werry, was born in 1849. She married Rev. William G. Cowle.
